The majority of household goods can easily be moved without special preparation. However, certain items found in many homes do need special packing attention. All of this preparation should be done before your moving crew arrives. This will ensure that your stuff is moved safely and in accordance with US Department of Transportation restrictions. Keep reading to learn how to prepare for your move.

How to Pack Your Belongings to Prepare for Your Move

Washing Machine: completely disconnect 72 hours prior to your move. This will allow for full drainage.

Dryer: disconnect 72 hours prior to your move. This will ensure that all elements are completely cooled.

Lawnmower/Gas-powered Lawn Tools: drain all fluids no less than 24 hours prior to moving day.

Grandfather Clock: pendulum and weights must be removed and safely stowed prior to the movers’ arrival.

Wall-mounted Televisions: TVs must be removed from the wall and all electrical components disconnected before your moving day.

Motorcycles/ATVs: all fluids must be drained no less than 24 hours prior to the move.

Firearms: all firearms must be unloaded prior to the move, and made accessible to movers to verify this prior to handling. Ammunition may not be moved in the moving trucks/vehicles.

Hot Tub: completely disconnect and drain 72 hours prior to your move.

Fish Tanks/Terrariums: completely drain and disconnect electrical and filtration systems at least 24 hours before your move.

Pianos: please advise your relocation consultant about the make and model of your piano in advance. This will help them properly estimate the appropriate crew size and equipment needed on your moving day.

Pool Table: slate must be removed prior to movers’ arrival.

Hanging/Wall Mounted Light Fixtures: these must be removed from the ceiling/wall prior to moving day. For chandeliers or wall sconces with hanging decorative crystals, these must also be detached prior to the movers’ arrivals.

If you are in doubt, ask your moving professionals if your item requires special preparations before your move. This will ensure that on moving day there will be no delays or confusion.
