Moving can be difficult as there are many things to consider. Apart from the challenges of packing up all of your belongings for a move, there are a few other things to do and you will need to take care of them before your moving day. To help make your transition to your new home smoother, consider some of these things to do before moving.

7 Things To Do Before Moving

1. Submit the Change of Address Request Form

You’ll need to complete a change of address request by either visiting your local post office or completing the form online. This will redirect all mail from your current address to your new home address beginning on whatever date you choose. If you’re completing a long-distance relocation, you can also utilize the mail hold services available. You can do this well ahead of your moving date. Then you can request a specific date for your mail to be redirected to your new home.

2. Cancel and/or Transfer Utility Services

Schedule the cancellation or transfer of your utility services, like cable, internet, security systems, newspaper deliveries, lawn care services, etc. However, be sure to begin this process 2 – 3 weeks before your scheduled move date to ensure that the services will be shut off or transferred on the correct date. We recommend that you also confirm the scheduled changes about 1 week before your moving day.

3. Arrange for Key Drop-Off and Pick-Up

You need to arrange with your current landlord or realtor a date and time to turn in your keys. Also conduct a walkthrough of the property after your possessions have been removed from the home. This is to check for any damages, and complete any move-out paperwork.

Arrange with your new landlord or realtor a date and time to obtain the keys to your new home. You should also perform a walkthrough of the new property to check for and document any existing damages and complete any move-in paperwork.

4. Complete School Transfer Requests

If you have children, then contact their current school(s) to request a transfer of their school transcripts to their new school district (if applicable). This request may take some time, so be sure to initiate this process about a month before your scheduled moving date. This will ensure that the new school will have the transcripts before you arrive at your new home.

But if you’re not changing school districts, you still have paperwork to complete. You will need to update your children’s school records with your new address, any new phone numbers, and new emergency contact persons.

5. Transfer Medical Records Where Necessary

Contact your current physicians and/or dentists to request that your medical records be transferred to your healthcare professionals in your new location. If you haven’t identified these new medical personnel, then you can also get copies that you can share after you have searched and found your new medical team. However, this process may take some time so begin making these requests about a month in advance of your moving date.

6. Get a Headstart on Cleaning

About a week before your move date, begin cleaning out your refrigerator and freezer. Try to consume as many perishable items as possible. Also remove any non-perishable items that you will not be transporting to your new home.  Refrigerators and freezers that are being moved will need to be emptied of contents, unplugged and drained no less than 24 hours before your moving date.

7. Secure Valuable Items That You Will Personally Transport

The night before your moving day, you must collect and pack any valuable or sensitive items (jewelry, personal documents, prescription medications, etc.) to be transported by you. This will help you avoid any confusion when the movers arrive to begin packing and loading your items.

Also, pack yourself a bag or box with some items that will help you out on the first day in your new home. This will contain toiletries, bedding, changes of clothing, basic cooking tools, and a first aid kit. You won’t have to worry about searching through your boxes for items you may need on your first day in your new home!
