A Guide to Moving to La Paz

When it comes to choosing a new hometown in Mexico, Baja del Sur doesn’t disappoint. The area has dozens of beautiful villages and towns that can be the perfect place to call home. But if you’re looking for a more metropolitan location that offers many of the same amenities you’ve come to expect while living in the States, those small towns might not be the best fit. Instead, you’ll want to look into moving to La Paz. Here are a few things to know about moving to this beautiful city.

La Paz Is a Proper City
La Paz may be in Baja, but it’s a true city. There are more than 250,000 residents that call the city home and that denser population means you’ll have access to many of the amenities, stores, and services you’re used to relying on every day. You’ll find a wide variety of restaurants, retailers, medical care providers, and more, making your transition into ex-pat life easier and more seamless.

The Cost of Living Is Low
Everyone knows that the average cost of living in Mexico is far cheaper than in the States. And La Paz is no different. You’ll be able to find accommodations for hundreds if not thousands of dollars less than you’re used to paying in the States. But as with any location, your exact expenses will depend on the lifestyle you want to live. It’s still possible to spend thousands of dollars on rent or a mortgage if you want a luxury property. If you’re trying to save money on your living expenses, you may want to work with a local realtor who can help you find a place to call home that fits your budget and your needs.

It’s a Predominantly Spanish-Speaking Locale
La Paz is a big city, and as such, it doesn’t attract the same influx of tourists as other smaller nearby towns. This means most of the people in the area conduct their business in Spanish rather than English. That’s not to say you won’t be able to find English speakers in the area. It just means you’ll want to pick up a little basic Spanish before you move. This way, you’ll be able to navigate your new hometown with more confidence.

There’s Lots to Do
La Paz is right off the Sea of Cortez, meaning you’ll be able to take advantage of all of the beach activities you’d enjoy in a more tourist-heavy area. Lounge on the sands at Playa el Coromuel, kayak in Belandra Bay, or swim with the whale sharks during the winter months. If indoor activities are more your style, you’ll find dozens of museums and events you can attend to fully immerse yourself in the culture.

The City Has a Low Crime Rate
Though crime is always a concern no matter where you live, La Paz is a relatively safe and family-friendly area. You’ll find locals comfortably strolling around downtown or enjoying the beach at all hours of the day. As long as you’re aware of your surroundings and take reasonable precautions, you’ll be in good shape.
