Firearms and Ammunition

Firearms may be freely allowed in several US states, but in Mexico, this is an entirely different matter. Mexico has severe penalties for unpermitted weapons.

If you enter Mexico with a firearm or a single round of ammunition without a permit, then you could spend up to 5 years in prison! It doesn’t matter if you did so by mistake (like a stray bullet finding itself in a moving box). So if you own firearms, be very careful when you’re packing your moving boxes. 

Illegal Drugs

As with the case of firearms and ammunition, importing illegal drugs into Mexico carries serious penalties. Drug trafficking is an offense punishable by imprisonment regardless of your citizenship status. 

You should also note that Mexico closely regulates the importation of prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications. But we’ll talk about how to transport your medications later. 

Suspicious and Destructive Items

Mexico also prohibits the importation of the following items:

  • Money and securities
  • Explosives and dangerous goods
  • Pornographic and pedophilia materials

If the Mexican authorities find any of these items in your shipment, then you may experience delays in your delivery. Furthermore, you will be subject to any fines, fees, and related imprisonment that may arise.

Other Items Prohibited From Being Imported into Mexico

Brand new household items could cause you some trouble with Mexican customs.

Other prohibited items don’t carry severe consequences. However, that doesn’t mean that you should ignore them. What happens if you have new items that you would like to import? These items will attract customs duties and you would have to import them separately. 

Medications (Including First Aid Kits)

The Mexican border officials closely regulate the movement of all medicines including OTC ones like inhalers and allergy/sinus treatments. 

Here’s an important note: You should never try to import products that contain stimulants like pseudoephedrine (a controlled substance) or codeine. If you try to import medications containing these stimulants you could be arrested even if you have a valid prescription.


Other Prohibited Items

Some other prohibited items that should not be shipped in your household goods container include:

  • Consumable items like paper towels, tissue, white paper, diapers. If you take them to Mexico, they will attract customs duties.
  • Food including spices, tinned and canned goods, supplements, and pet food. 
  • Beverages such as wine, beer, and other spirits. 
  • Toiletries, sanitary goods, and cosmetics.
  • Hunting trophies and taxidermy items. 
  • Cleaning chemicals like detergent and soaps. 
  • Collectible items like coins and pens. 
  • Batteries, blank CDs, DVDs, and tapes. 
  • Parts for cars, boats, and motorcycles. 
  • Large quantities of similar items, as these are perceived as being intended for sale in Mexico.
